Mercedes-Benz today launched the new entry level diesel E-class in India, E 220d at Rs. 57.14 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune). Just 1 lakh more than their entry level E 200 petrol variant, which is priced at Rs. 56.14 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune).
The E 200d is powered by a new OM654 four-cylinder 1,950cc diesel engine, which is 31kg lighter than the 2.1-liter engine it replaces globally and produces 194 hp at 3,800 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 1,600 – 2,800 rpm.
It is mated to a 9-speed automatic gearbox and can out accelerate the petrol E 200 in 0-100 kph run by 0.7 seconds (7.8 seconds vs. 8.5 seconds) and can hit a top speed of 240 kph.
E 220d’s engine was originally developed for the European market and Euro VI emission norms and has been tuned to run on the BS-IV diesel available in India.
Apart from the badging on the car and different alloy wheels, visually there is no difference between the E 220d and E 350d from the outside. Even on the inside, things remain mostly similar with a difference in wood grain and different upholstery design.
E 220d gets the same interior and exterior package as the E 200 and with it, it gets LED headlamps, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, three-zone auto climate control, a reversing camera, seven airbags, ABS and stability control.
The new E-class in India has been a huge success and with the launch of E 220d, it is only going to attract more buyers, thanks to its market proven good looks and features, coupled with a competent and light-weight diesel engine, which is almost priced on par with the petrol variant, it outperforms acceleration and fuel economy wise!
